A Guide to Writing A CV

As more and more employees join the job market you will need to do everything you can to help your application to stand out from the crowd.  This includes gearing your covering letter and cv towards each role that you apply for.  Sending a generic cv will not achieve the desired result.   In today’s employment market a good cv will help you to apply quickly. As many orga­nisa­tions use an online application system which will parse your cv for you rather than you having to fill in an online application each time.

Here are our suggested tips to assist you on your way to finding a new role.

Use the correct font – Keep the font profes­sional, clear and simple.­  You want your application to be easy on the eye.

Heading – The heading should be your name, not the words “Curriculum Vitae”.  Your name should be at the top of the page in a larger font and in bold.  You can use colour too, but please be subtle – red would not be good.  Blue normally works well.  Under your name, in regular font, put your contact details i.e. your email address and phone number.  Your home address can go here too.  You want to make it easy for a potential employer to get in touch. 

Personal Statement - This is your opportunity to impress a potential employer.

  • Keep it brief, no more than 100 words.
  • Keep it relevant, so anything you say should be geared towards the job that you are applying for.  Do not repeat what you have put in your covering letter.
  • Sell yourself – Give an overview of your abilities and skills that are relevant to the job to which you are applying.

Employment History – Remember to put your most recent role first.  Give details of the Job Title, Company Name and Employment dates (and these should be in bold).  Emphasise anything relevant to the job you’re applying for.  Use active words such as inspired, cultivated, motivated, generated, transformed.­  You mustn't lie or exaggerate your experience or skill set, you will need to be able to substantiate the detail at interview.

Education – Here you should list and date all former education, including any professional quali­fica­tions.­  Detail the most recent information first.

Interests – Relevant interests can give an insight into the person applying for the role.  Give information about hobbies and activities that are important to you but remember the focus of this document is to get you a new job role.

Spell check and grammar check – This is one of the main areas where applicants fail at the first hurdle.  Please ensure that you read the information, spell check and grammar check the document.  As we said at the beginning “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”.
